Fly SFO, Oakland or San Jose? A Pilot's Bay Area Guide
Matt, DelayGuard founder. Published October 18, 2026. 8 min read.
Figures checked against DelayGuard BTS tables on 2026-10-18. Canonical page: Bay Area airport comparison.
TL;DR
Pick by departure time. In BTS data (Jan 2023 to Dec 2025), San Jose departures arrived 15 or more minutes late 15.8% of the time, Oakland 18.0%, and San Francisco 20.8%. Before 8 AM, Oakland is lowest at 6.1%, San Jose 6.7%, and San Francisco 9.1%. After 8 PM, San Francisco is lowest at 22.0%. See the Bay Area airport comparison for the table.
Which Bay Area airport has the fewest delays?
Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) has the fewest delays of these three Bay Area airports. In BTS data (Jan 2023 to Dec 2025), 15.8% of flights departing San Jose arrived 15 or more minutes late, across 147,027 flights. Oakland International Airport (OAK) was next at 18.0% of 120,833 flights, and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) was highest at 20.8% of 409,744 flights, under the 21.2% rate for all US domestic flights in the same tables. SFO is ranked 16 of 22 among DelayGuard's guide airports (1 is the highest rate). Oakland and San Jose are statistics pages, not one of the 22 full guide airports. The head-to-head table is on the Bay Area airport comparison.
The answer flips after dark
The order is not the same at both ends of the day. Share of departing flights that arrived 15 or more minutes late, BTS data (Jan 2023 to Dec 2025):
| Airport | Before 8 AM | After 8 PM |
|---|
| San Francisco International Airport (SFO) | 9.1% | 22.0% |
| Oakland International Airport (OAK) | 6.1% | 30.3% |
| Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) | 6.7% | 24.9% |
Before 8 AM, Oakland is lowest and San Francisco is highest. After 8 PM, San Francisco is lowest and Oakland is highest. San Francisco is the highest of the three across the whole window and the lowest of the three after 8 PM.
BTS describes that build-up as late-arriving aircraft: a previous flight on the same aircraft arrives late, and the next departure waits. These tables do not include a percentage for that cause.
Southwest Airlines flew 85.0% of Oakland departures in the window, and those flights ran 18.4% late. At San Jose, Southwest Airlines flew 60.2% of departures and ran 17.3% late. One carrier's aircraft rotation is most of the evening bank at those two airports. At San Francisco, United Airlines is the largest carrier, at 37.8% of departures, and those flights ran 18.6% late. That is not most of San Francisco's departures, so the evening there is not one airline's rotation in the same way.
The best and worst scheduled hours in the same tables, for hours with at least 100 flights:
| Airport | Best hour | Worst hour |
|---|
| San Francisco International Airport (SFO) | 5 AM (5.2%) | 3 PM (27.5%) |
| Oakland International Airport (OAK) | 6 AM (5.2%) | 9 PM (34.8%) |
| Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) | 6 AM (6.3%) | 9 PM (28.6%) |
The full hour tables are on the airport pages: SFO delay rates by hour, Oakland airport delays, and San Jose airport delays. The national pattern is in morning vs evening flight delays.
Why SFO runs late: 750 feet
Most SFO arrivals use two closely spaced parallel runways, 28L and 28R, with centerlines 750 feet apart. That spacing limits how many approaches can run side by side when ceilings drop. Source: DOT/BTS: SFO landings use closely spaced parallel runways 28R and 28L, 750 ft between centerlines.
What happened to that spacing in 2026 is a separate story, and this post does not retell it. The record is in SFO Runway 1R reopens, the capacity cut, and six months on.
After Runway 1R reopened on 29 September 2026, SFO said it expects 45–48 arrivals an hour, not a return to 54. That figure is SFO's expectation, not a delay rate measured in these BTS tables, which run through December 2025. Source: SFO, 16 September 2026.
Check your own flight. The predictor is an ML model trained on BTS data (2023 to mid-2025), plus live weather and FAA information. It scores one departure. It is not the historical rate in the table above.
Seasons: when each airport is worst
Same departure window, BTS data (Jan 2023 to Dec 2025). Each row is that airport's own highest and lowest month, not a blend of the three.
| Airport | Worst month | Best month |
|---|
| San Francisco International Airport (SFO) | March (24.2%) | October (16.8%) |
| Oakland International Airport (OAK) | July (22.3%) | November (13.2%) |
| Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) | June (19.7%) | November (12.9%) |
San Francisco peaks in March and is lowest in October. Oakland peaks in July and is lowest in November. San Jose peaks in June and is lowest in November.
Cancellations
Cancellations are a different count: scheduled departures in 2024 to 2025, not the January 2023 to December 2025 delay window. San Jose cancelled 0.65% of 96,294 scheduled departures. Oakland cancelled 0.67% of 75,960. San Francisco cancelled 1.03% of 279,473. The US figure for the same period is 1.41%.
Routes from SFO
DelayGuard's route pages publish these San Francisco departure rates for January 2023 to December 2025 (BTS). 26.9% of 17,244 flights from San Francisco to Las Vegas arrived 15 or more minutes late (SFO to LAS). 21.44% of 33,711 flights to Los Angeles did (SFO to LAX). 19.76% of 20,286 flights to New York (JFK) did (SFO to JFK).
The route insight file has no departures from Oakland or San Jose, and those airports are not in the set that gets an indexable route page. This post does not quote route delay rates for them. The airport pages linked below have each airport's own route table.
Choosing in practice
Reliability only. This post does not compare fares.
- The airline on the ticket. Southwest flew 85.0% of Oakland departures and 60.2% of San Jose departures in this window, so Southwest is the carrier behind most of each airport's record. At San Francisco, United Airlines is the largest carrier, at 37.8%, and it is not most of the departures.
- The departure hour. Before 8 AM, Oakland has the lowest delay rate of the three. After 8 PM, San Francisco does.
- A connection. A late inbound is how an earlier delay becomes your departure. See where your plane is coming from.
- The ground transport you will actually use. This page does not estimate travel time.
- Spirit Airlines flew 5.5% of Oakland departures in this history. Spirit stopped flying on 2 May 2026 (Spirit Aviation Holdings statement, 2 May 2026), so a Spirit booking from Oakland will not operate. Today's carrier mix at Oakland is not the mix behind that share.
Check your own flight. Same predictor: an ML model trained on BTS data (2023 to mid-2025). For the historical pages, use SFO delay rates by hour, Oakland airport delays, and San Jose airport delays. Will my flight be delayed? explains the score.

FAQ
Which Bay Area airport has the fewest delays?
Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) has the fewest delays of the three. In BTS data (Jan 2023 to Dec 2025), 15.8% of flights departing San Jose arrived 15 or more minutes late, across 147,027 flights. Oakland International Airport was 18.0% across 120,833 flights. San Francisco International Airport was 20.8% across 409,744 flights.
Is Oakland or SFO better for an early flight?
Oakland is better for a flight before 8 AM. In BTS data (Jan 2023 to Dec 2025), 6.1% of Oakland departures scheduled before 8 AM arrived 15 or more minutes late, against 9.1% at San Francisco International Airport. San Jose was 6.7% in that same window.
Which Bay Area airport is best for a late-evening flight?
San Francisco International Airport is the best of the three for a departure after 8 PM. In BTS data (Jan 2023 to Dec 2025), 22.0% of San Francisco departures scheduled after 8 PM arrived 15 or more minutes late, against 24.9% at San Jose and 30.3% at Oakland.
Which Bay Area airport cancels the fewest flights?
San Jose cancels the fewest. In 2024 to 2025, 0.65% of 96,294 scheduled San Jose departures were cancelled, 0.67% of 75,960 at Oakland, and 1.03% of 279,473 at San Francisco. The US figure for the same period is 1.41%.
Did SFO's runway reopening fix its delays?
These BTS tables end in December 2025, so they do not measure delays after Runway 1R reopened on 29 September 2026. SFO said it expects 45–48 arrivals an hour after that reopening, not a return to 54. That is SFO's expectation, not a DelayGuard measurement. The long-run delay rate at San Francisco International Airport in these tables is still 20.8% (BTS data, Jan 2023 to Dec 2025). The runway history is in the linked posts on this page.
How does DelayGuard predict my flight?
DelayGuard scores the flight you enter. The score comes from an ML model trained on BTS data (2023 to mid-2025), combined with live weather and FAA delay information. It is a likelihood of delay, not a guarantee, and it is not the historical airport rate on this page.
