Air traffic control delays by US airport
Among the 39 airports with a DelayGuard airport page (22 delay guides and 17 statistics pages), Fort Lauderdale (FLL) had the highest share of departures with a BTS National Aviation System (NAS) delay: 16.09% of 264,272 completed departures from January 2023 to December 2025.
BTS NAS delays cover non-extreme weather, airport operations, heavy traffic volume and air traffic control, so this is not an air-traffic-control-only count. Miami (MIA) was next at 14.87%, Orlando (MCO) at 14.40%, and San Jose (SJC) was lowest at 6.46%.

Which airports have the most air traffic control delays?
The share is departures, not arrivals. A completed departure counts when it was not cancelled and not diverted. It has an NAS delay when BTS NASDelay is greater than zero. BTS fills that field only if the flight arrived 15 or more minutes late, and it does not say whether the minutes accrued at FLL or somewhere else on the route.
Across these 39 airports, 11.08% of 14,323,349 completed departures had NASDelay greater than zero. Across every origin in the files, the share was 10.59% of 20,588,136 completed flights.
On 15 May 2026 the FAA published its 2026–2028 Air Traffic Controller Workforce Plan. The plan sets a staffing target of 12,563 certified professional controllers and says about 11,000 were deployed as of April 2026, with hiring targets of 2,200 in FY 2026, 2,300 in FY 2027 and 2,400 in FY 2028. On 16 October 2026 the FAA and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association announced a 2.8% pay increase. The FAA said the increase takes effect 18 October 2026 and is "retroactive to the beginning of the year." Those are FAA figures, not BTS delay rates.

How is an air traffic control delay counted?
BTS defines National Aviation System (NAS) delays and cancellations as those attributable to the national aviation system from a broad set of conditions, such as non-extreme weather conditions, airport operations, heavy traffic volume, and air traffic control. This share is completed departures (not cancelled, not diverted) from January 2023 through December 2025 with NASDelay > 0. The airport is the origin. BTS records NAS minutes only on flights that arrived 15 or more minutes late, and does not assign those minutes to a specific airport.
The title says air traffic control because that is the common search. The metric is the broader BTS NAS category. Months counted: 2023-01, 2023-02, 2023-03, 2023-04, 2023-05, 2023-06, 2023-07, 2023-08, 2023-09, 2023-10, 2023-11, 2023-12, 2024-01, 2024-02, 2024-03, 2024-04, 2024-05, 2024-06, 2024-07, 2024-08, 2024-09, 2024-10, 2024-11, 2024-12, 2025-01, 2025-02, 2025-03, 2025-04, 2025-05, 2025-06, 2025-07, 2025-08, 2025-09, 2025-10, 2025-11, 2025-12.
