Tight Connection or Minimum Connection Time? How Often Hub Arrivals Run Late
A tight connection is the time you actually have between flights. A minimum connection time is the shortest gap an airline will sell. This guide shows how often inbound flights at ORD, ATL, DFW, DEN and CLT arrived late.
Quick answer
About 1 in 10 arrivals nationwide (9.90%) were 45 or more minutes late, with the highest overall share at DFW (11.87%) and the lowest at Atlanta (ATL) (8.45%).
The worst arrival hour was late evening at ORD (9 PM) and DEN (8 PM) and around midnight at ATL (1 AM), DFW (12 AM), and CLT (12 AM).

How we calculated this
Minimum connection times are set by airports and airlines. This page does not restate those minimums. It shows the share of flights arriving at ORD, ATL, DFW, DEN and CLT that were 30, 45, or 60 or more minutes late. The figures are historical BTS arrival shares for January 2023 to December 2025. BTS On-Time Reporting has no passenger itinerary, so the shares are not connection outcomes.
Across all destinations in these BTS files, 13.85% of arrivals were 30 or more minutes late, 9.90% were 45 or more minutes late, and 7.46% were 60 or more minutes late (20,588,134 flights).
Each hub table has three rows: every scheduled arrival hour, the hour with the highest share 45 or more minutes late, and the hour with the lowest share. Best and worst hours are chosen from scheduled arrival hours with at least 1,000 flights. An earlier hour breaks a tie. Hour cells with fewer than 100 flights are omitted rather than estimated. Cancelled and diverted flights are excluded.

Questions
- What is a minimum connection time?
- A minimum connection time is the shortest connection an airline or an airport will sell as a legal connection on one ticket. The airline and the airport set it, and it can differ by carrier and by whether either flight is international. The official pages linked above are where those rules live. DelayGuard does not republish the minutes.
- Is a 45-minute connection enough?
- BTS does not record passenger connections, so these shares are not connection outcomes. At DFW, 11.87% of inbound flights were already 45 or more minutes late (105,784 of 891,297). At Atlanta (ATL) that share was 8.45% (82,801 of 979,420). A late inbound is one reason a short connection fails. It is not the only reason.
- What counts as a tight connection?
- There is no BTS definition of a tight connection. Travelers usually mean a connection close to the minimum the airline will sell. The tables use three lateness thresholds for the inbound flight: 30 or more minutes, 45 or more minutes, and 60 or more minutes. Those thresholds are not a recommended connection time.
